• Definition:
Transience refers to the natural decrease in the accessibility of information as time passes. It is the gradual forgetting of facts and events—the idea that memory fades over time.

Ebbinghaus’s work (and his famous forgetting curve) provides a quantitative demonstration of transience. His studies with nonsense syllables showed a rapid loss of information soon after learning, followed by a more gradual decline, illustrating how memories become less accessible with time.
2. Absent-Mindedness
• Definition:
Absent-mindedness is a type of forgetting that occurs when attention is not sufficiently allocated during the encoding or retrieval of information. This lapse in attention leads to shallow processing of experiences or failures to execute intended actions.
• Role of Attention:
Attention is crucial in both encoding (when we first experience or learn something) and retrieval (when we try to remember it later). When our attention is divided or directed elsewhere, the information is processed less deeply, increasing the likelihood of forgetting.

• Definition:

In a tip-of-the-tongue state, a person experiences the frustrating feeling of knowing that the information exists (for example, a word or a name) but is momentarily unable to retrieve it. This is a classic example of blocking.

• Interference: Competing information or similar memories may intrude and prevent the successful retrieval of the target memory.
