The fastest way to answer isolation questions is to know the disease-to-precaution match.

Core Pattern

  • Contact → gown + gloves

  • Droplet → surgical/procedure mask

  • Airborne → N95 + negative-pressure room

Some diseases require more than one precaution, so do not force every disease into only one category.


CONTACT PRECAUTIONS

Contact precautions are used when organisms spread through:

  • Direct physical contact

  • Contaminated surfaces

  • Contaminated equipment

  • Hands of healthcare workers

Use dedicated equipment when possible.

C. difficile

Clostridioides difficile causes infectious diarrhea and colitis.

Transmission

Hand Hygiene

For many hospitalized patients with MRSA:
