Learning Curves & Plateaus

Learning Curve

A graphical representation of learning increase with experience. Ebbinghaus described the learning curve, indicating a sharp initial increase that gradually evens out. Types include:

  • Concave Curve (positively accelerated): slow start, then rapid improvement.

  • Convex Curve (negatively accelerated): rapid start, then slower improvement.

  • Concave-Convex Curve (S-shaped): combination of both.

Learning Plateau

A period where learning plateaus, showing no significant progress due to factors like fatigue or boredom. Strategies to minimize plateaus include varied teaching methods, creating interest, and minimizing distractions.

Transfer of Learning

The application of knowledge or skills from one situation to another. Types:

  • Positive Transfer: Learning in one area aids learning in another.

  • Negative Transfer: Learning in one area hinders learning in another.

  • Neutral Transfer: No impact between learning areas.

Teaching for Positive Transfer

Focus on in-depth understanding, connect new concepts to prior knowledge, highlight differences between similar topics, and emphasize principles over rote memorization.

Experiential Learning

Learning Styles-Kolb and VARK

Kolb's Model

Learning occurs through the transformation of experience. Four modes: Concrete Experience, Abstract Conceptualization, Reflective Observation, and Active Experimentation. Four learning styles:

  • Accommodator: hands-on, practical

  • Converger: practical application of theories

  • Diverger: imaginative, discussion-oriented

  • Assimilator: inductive reasoning, theory creation

VARK Model

Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic learning styles.

Behaviorism

Thorndike’s Theory of Connectionism

Learning results from associations between stimuli and responses (S-R). Thorndike's Laws:

  • Law of Effect: Rewarded responses are strengthened.

  • Law of Readiness: Actions can be chained together if part of the same sequence.

  • Law of Exercise: Connections strengthen with practice.

Pavlov’s Theory of Classical Conditioning

Learning through stimulus-response association. Components: unconditioned stimulus, unconditioned response, conditioned stimulus, and conditioned response.

Skinner’s Theory of Operant Conditioning

Behavior is modified by reinforcement (positive or negative) and punishment. Operant conditioning deals with operants - intentional actions (responses) that have an effect on the surrounding environment.

Constructivism

Social Constructivism (Vygotsky)

Emphasizes social interaction in developing cognition. Key concepts: Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding. Principles: learning is social, ZPD guides planning, learning occurs in meaningful contexts, relate out-of-school experiences, and language is a tool for understanding.

Cognitive Constructivism (Piaget)

Learners actively construct knowledge through experience. Key processes: assimilation, accommodation, equilibration, and schemas. Learning is an active, whole, and real process.

Discovery Learning (Bruner)

Inquiry-based learning where learners discover facts and relationships. Promotes active learning, decision-making, and hypothesis generation. Includes enactive, iconic, and symbolic stages.

Social Cognitive Learning (Bandura)

Learning occurs through observation, imitation, and modeling. Importance of mental states and vicarious reinforcement. Modeling process: attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation.

Cognitive Theory - Insight Learning (Gestalt School)

Learning through sudden realization of solutions (insight), not trial and error. Gestalt principles: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Laws of learning: proximity, similarity, closure, and continuity.
