Regions are defined as

One or more unifying characteristics (human or physical) or patterns of activvity

  1. formal
  2. functional
  3. Vernacular. Perceptual

A formal Region is..

United by one or more specific traits

  • economic (Like the Euro in Europe)
  • social (like the Islamic world ((distribution o Muslim adherents is primarily clustered in SW and C Asia)) or the bible belt in the USA)
  • political (States and capitals in Europe)
  • environmental (Sahara desert)
  • Functional R4egion - organized around a central node (focal point) and the relationship is typically based around econ, travel or communication

A perceptual/vernacular region

Vernacular/ Perceptual region is based on a person’s perspective or perception of a certain location

  • Informal
  • Sense of place & cultural identity
  • Boundaries vary widely bc ppl have a diff sense o what defines and unites these regions

Regional boundaries are

  • transitional
  • contested
  • overlapping
