Linen

  • Definition: Linen is a composite fiber derived from the inner bark of the plant Linum usitatissimum, consisting of approximately 70% cellulose.
  • Production Process:
    • Maceration: Dried stalks are immersed in water for several days.
    • Alternative Methods: A faster method involves using water steam or specific bacteria to break down binding substances, releasing fibers.
    • Physical Processing: Once fibers are released, they undergo pressing using hammers or hand-operated machines to crush and grind the woody parts.
  • Combing:
    • Raw flax undergoes combing to separate long fibers from shorter or broken fibers, producing tow.
  • Classification:
    • Linens are categorized based on the fineness of fibers:
    • Fine linens: Used for producing fine yarns, valuable paintings (i.e., canvas lawn), and lace.
    • Common linens: Cloth for general-purpose large linen canvases.
  • Characteristics:

Hemp

Jute

  • Production:
    • Jute fibers are extracted from the stem of the plant, which can reach heights of 2 to 4 meters.

  • Strength: Ramie is known as one of the strongest natural fibers, with resistance increasing when wet.
  • Notable Properties: The fiber is celebrated for its non-shrinkage, gloss, and high-temperature resistance.
  • Common Uses: Ramie is frequently blended with other fibers, including cotton and wool, to improve durability and function.

Coconut and Other Fibers

  • Coconut Fiber: Derived from the fibrous part surrounding the coconut; notable for its extreme resistance.
  • Banana Fiber: Used as a strong textile fiber sourced from banana plants.
  • Bamboo Fiber: Gaining popularity for its sustainability and softness, extracted from bamboo grass.
