GWB and Paint

GWB

  • made from gypsum— type of rock, additives are added to increase fire, moisuture and sound resistance

  • Video: gypsum is a natural mineral. Mined to produce gypsum plaster. begins at the guarry. the gypsum fdoes into a rotating drum. combines a dry mixture and makes the gypsum white. Next, a kettle cooks gypsum in 200 degrees fareinheit. grinds the rock into stucco. mixes additives to make the board have the required structure. then they mix stucco in accelerator. Makes a “slurry” mixture. They then form the GWB. wheels score a line and machine spreads a slurry. Next, paper folding operation wheels trap the slurry inside. This forms plates. A cutter then chops the boards. they then go through dryers and then get progressivly cooler. 8 ft 2.5 m to 12’ 3.6 m in length is the size range.

  • commercial 3: car wash, etc. moisture res GWB is not waterproof. And should not be exposed to water before installation. It is not intended as a tile substrate, instead cement board is used for tile.

PAINT

  • helps conceal imperfections or inconsitancies. Paint protects drywall

  • helps clean and maintain surface over time

  • thicker paints must be thinned to create smaller particles to create smaller atomization. Thicker paints might not atomize properly- inconsitant spray patterns

  • Binders: urethane and natural rubber: offer flexibility and resistance to water and oil… Oil paints are slow drying and can be thinned with solvents ( make the painting process easier). shellac and rosin provide sealing, gloss and adhesive properties. Latex is durable and adheres well while alkyd and epoxy offer durablility for mental and heavy duty applications. vinyl is stress res and good for places needing extra protection.

  • additives such as preservers, foamers, free saw stabilizers, anti-skinning agents and dryers enhance paint performance. They help prevent mold growth improving flow and leveling, resist sagging, and control drying time.

  • gloss Varnish— when dry, the solvent evaporates, leaving a durable transparent film.

  • flat or satin— has inert pigment which remains transparent when it dries, making it suitable for cabinets and areas w moderate wear.

  • Lustre— Key qualities: scrubability (resistance to washing), flexibility (ability to expand and contract without cracking)

  • gloss and sheen— effects of paint — flat: matt (little to no reflection) eggshell: low gloss (low to mid reflection) semi-gloss: mid to moderate reflection, and high gloss (high reflection when dry).

  • flat finish is ideal for cecilings.

  • Eggshell if very washabble, resistance to fading, and mimimizes wall defects.

  • Walls in moderate traffic areas, a satin finish is more washable than eggshell

  • gloss promotes adhesion

  • when intumescent paint is heated, it creates a foam which protects and fire rates whatever its been painted on. rating can be as high as 2 hrs.

  • anti-graffiti paints are sacrificial surface that is easy to wash off and take the graffiti with it, revealing another layer of paint beneath.


  • paint defects: enviromental, surface prep problems, physical handeleing… Picture framing, orange peel, over spray are caused by improper application techniques… Environmental factors such as moisture, sunlight, and temp cause fading bloom and cracking, flaking and peelling… Inadequate surface prep and Poor adhesion leads to blistering and pinholes. And handelling issues such as friction result in burnishing. Sagging and wrinkling are a result of over application or adverse weather conditions.
