The Criticism of Art & Judgment of Aesthetics: Steps in Evaluating Art

  1. THE ARTIST AND THE ARTISAN

Artists - artists focus on creating aesthetically pleasing works. Artisans - are craftsmen who make practical artistic products. The job responsibilities of an artists include:

  • Developing ideas for a canvas or product;

  • Selecting a medium for a final work,including texture, size, or area;

  • Collecting work for a portfolio and

  • Applying for grants for financial support.

The job responsibilities of an artisan include:

  • Using and mixing mediums like paint, metal,glass, or fabric;

  • Shaping, gluing, sewing, testing, and producing products;

  • Displaying work at various sites including auctions, craft shows, or online markets; and

  • Estimating costs and material needs.

SOME AREAS COVER BY PERFORMING ARTS MANAGEMENT

Organization - Performance is the bread and butter. - Programming and talent development should be solid skills.

Accounting - Responsible for budgeting and making tough choices for operations.

The Law - Protects the creative rights of both artists and artisans. Fundraising -To look for funding institutions that will provide grants and subsidies for a successful operation of the arts industry.

Marketing -Advertisements and promotions to increase art production and sales.

Public Relations - The primary job is to communicate and serve the company’s client.

Flexibility - No fixed schedule for all staff and artists.

Art Dealer Middleman Buys and sell Duties: Dealing, Networking and Searching

Art Collector Private collectors observe trends in arts most of the time.

Art Buyer Produce commercial advertising projects that are within the budget. Experts in writing contracts and purchase orders.

  1. AWARD

    • An award is something that is conferred or bestowed especially based on merit or need. (Recognition)

    • These are the things to consider in giving an award which are the number of years in practicing the arts, providing jobs for others, and a proven sense of nationalism in noble and tangible actions. Awardee’s reputation was also scrutinized.

RENOWN - It is not enough that you are known to a limited number of people but also outside the art world. His or her artwork made an impact on everybody. (Vincent Van Gogh)

GAMABA AWARDS

  • Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Treasure Award

  • Republic Act No. 7355

  • National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) the implementing agency.

  • GAMABA shall mean a citizen engaged in any traditional art uniquely Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached a high level of technical and artistic excellence and have been passed on to generations and widely practiced with the present generation in his/her community.

Qualifications to Become a Manlilikha ng Bayan:

  1. He/she is an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines that has preserved indigenous customs, beliefs, rituals and traditions and/or has syncretized whatever external elements that have influenced it.

  2. He/she must have engaged in a folk-art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least fifty (50) years.

  3. He/she must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period, works of superior and distinctive quality.

  4. He/she must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art and must have an established reputation in the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary technical quality.

  5. He/she must have passed on and/or will pass on to other members of the community their skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known.

Even if the traditional artist is incapable of teaching his/her masterpiece due to advanced age or sickness, he/she can still be rewarded if:

  1. He/she has created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her art, thus achieving important contributions for its development.

  2. He/she has been instrumental in the revitalization of

his/her community's artistic tradition.3. He/she has passed on to the other members of the community skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known.

4. His/her community has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft.

The Order of National Artists

  • A national artist is a Filipino citizen who has been given the rank and title of National Artist in recognition of his or her significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts and letters.

  • By means of Presidential Proclamation

  • Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining

  • National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA) and

CulturalCenter of the Philippines (CCP) and is conferred by the President by both agencies recommendation.

When was the order of National Artist created?

Presidential Proclamation No.1001, s. 1972, which created the Award and Decoration of National Artist.
