Chapter 6 — Session 4: HTTP, HTTPS, NTP & SNMP


We’re continuing the Chapter 6 protocol/port objectives.

Today:

HTTP = TCP 80
NTP = UDP 123
SNMP = UDP 161/162
HTTPS = TCP 443

You already learned NTP in Chapter 5, so we won’t overdo it. Here, the main goal is recognizing NTP = UDP 123 as a common protocol/port.


🌐 1. HTTP — Hypertext Transfer Protocol

HTTP = Hypertext Transfer Protocol

HTTP is used for:

Web traffic

When a browser communicates with a web server, HTTP is one protocol that can handle the communication.

🔓 HTTP Is NOT Encrypted

This is an important distinction.

HTTP itself does not provide encrypted web communication.

That leads us to HTTPS.

HTTPS = Secure web communication

HTTPS protects web traffic using encryption.

HTTPS Port

3. NTP — Network Time Protocol

You should recognize this one from Chapter 5.

NTP = Network Time Protocol

Its job is:

Synchronize clocks

Keeping time synchronized is especially important when comparing logs from multiple network devices.

📊 4. SNMP — Simple Network Management Protocol

Now we get to a new important one.

SNMP = Simple Network Management Protocol

SNMP is used to:

Monitor and manage network devices

Think about devices such as:

Instead of manually checking every device, a network management system can use SNMP to collect information about them.


🧠 Think of SNMP Like a Network Supervisor

Imagine you manage 100 switches.

You want information such as:

Is the device online?

How much traffic is it handling?

Is an interface having problems?

Is something unusual happening?

SNMP helps network-management software gather information from devices.

UDP 161 and 162

But these two ports have different purposes.

This distinction is VERY worth knowing.


📥 UDP 161 — Queries

Normally, the management system asks a device for information.

UDP 161 = Normal SNMP communication/queries.


🚨 UDP 162 — Traps

An SNMP trap is different.

Instead of waiting for the management system to ask:

The device sends an alert.

Example:

SNMP Manager vs. Agent

There are two roles worth understanding.

💻 SNMP Manager

The management system.

It monitors the network.

🔀 SNMP Agent

Software running on the device being monitored.

Think:

Manager asks.

Agent answers.


📚 MIB

Another SNMP term:

MIB = Management Information Base

Think of the MIB as:

The organized information SNMP can access about a device.

You don't need to make this complicated.
