God the Son - Summary Notes
Who is God the Son?
- Jesus is God the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity.
- Eternally begotten of the Father, not created.
- Shares the same divine nature as the Father; "true God from true God."
- John1:1−3,14: "In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh."
- Became flesh for our salvation (CCC 456-457).
God the Son Reveals the Father
- John14:9: "Whoever has seen me has seen my Father."
- Reveals God through His words, actions, and love.
- Reveals the Father's love, justice, and mercy.
- Opens the way to salvation through His life, death, and resurrection.
- Resurrection confirms His divine identity and brings new life (CCC 651-654).
- Acts as a bridge between humanity and divinity.
The Son's Role in the Trinity
- Sent by the Father to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.
- Sends the Holy Spirit with the Father to guide the Church after His resurrection.
- Highlights the Trinity as a community of love and mission (CCC 243-244).
- The Son’s mission is inseparable from the Father and the Spirit (CCC 257).
Belief in God the Son
- Central to Catholic life and faith.
- Worshipped as God, not just a wise man or prophet.
- Every sacrament, prayer, and act of worship is rooted in Christ.
- Colossians1:15−20: "He is the image of the invisible God… and in Him all things are held together."
- Trusting in God's love and living as His followers.
- Without Jesus, there is no way to understand the full nature of God or experience salvation (CCC 431-432).
Reflection
- Central to the Catholic Faith; without Him, there is no salvation.
- Belief in His divinity and humanity is essential.
- Shows us what God is like and teaches us how to live.
- Worship, sacraments, and prayer all center on Christ.
