Anatomical Terminology and Body Regions

Anatomical Directional Terms

  • Anterior (ventral): Towards the front of the body.

  • Posterior (dorsal): Towards the back of the body.

  • Medial: Towards the midline of the body.

  • Lateral: Away from the midline of the body.

  • Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or trunk.

  • Distal: Farther from the point of attachment or trunk.

  • Superficial: Towards or at the body surface.

  • Deep: Away from the body surface; more internal.

  • Ipsilateral: On the same side of the body.

  • Contralateral: On opposite sides of the body.

Regional Terms (Body Parts)

  • These terms designate specific areas or regions of the body.

A. Axial Body Parts

  • Forms the main vertical axis, including the head, neck, and trunk.

    • Head (Cephalic Region):

      • Cranial: Refers to the skull.

      • Facial: Refers to the face; includes:

        • Frontal: Forehead.

        • Orbital: Eye.

        • Buccal: Cheek.

        • Otic: Ear.

        • Mental: Chin.

        • Oral: Mouth.

    • Neck (Cervical Region): Connects the head to the trunk.

    • Trunk:

      • Thoracic Region (Thorax/Chest): The upper trunk; includes:

        • Axillary: Armpit.

        • Mammary: Breast.

      • Abdominal Region (Abdomen): The central trunk.

      • Pelvic Region (Pelvis): The lower trunk; includes:

        • Pubic: Genital region.

      • Dorsal Region (Back): The posterior trunk; includes:

        • Scapular: Shoulder blade.

        • Vertebral: Spinal column.

        • Lumbar: Lower back.

        • Sacral: Posterior region between hips.

        • Gluteal: Buttock.

        • Perineal: Region between the anus and external genitalia.

B. Appendicular Body Parts (Limbs)

  • Upper Limbs (Arms):

    • Shoulder (Deltoid Region).

    • Arm (Brachial Region): The upper arm.

    • Antecubital: The anterior elbow pit.

    • Olecranal/Cubital: The posterior elbow.

    • Forearm (Antebrachial Region): The area from the elbow to the wrist.

    • Wrist (Carpal Region).

    • Hand (Manual Region):

      • Palmar/Volar: The palm.

      • Dorsum of Hand: The back of the hand.

      • Digital/Phalangeal: Refers to the fingers.

      • Pollex: The thumb.

  • Lower Limbs (Legs):

    • Hip (Coxal Region).

    • Thigh (Femoral Region): From the hip to the knee.

    • Patellar: The anterior kneecap.

    • Popliteal: The posterior knee pit.

    • Leg (Crural Region): From the knee to the ankle.

    • Sural: The calf.

    • Fibular/Peroneal: The lateral side of the leg.

    • Ankle (Tarsal Region).

      • Digital/Phalangeal: Refers to the toes.

      • Hallux: The big toe.

Body Cavities

  • Body cavities are spaces within the body that contain organs and are lined with membranes.

Dorsal Body Cavity

  • Protects the nervous system.

    • Cranial Cavity: Contains the brain.

    • Vertebral (Spinal) Cavity: Encases the spinal cord.

Ventral Body Cavity

  • Houses most visceral organs.

    • Thoracic Cavity: The superior cavity, separated from the abdominopelvic cavity by the diaphragm.

      • Pleural Cavities: Each surrounds a lung.

      • Mediastinum: The central region containing the heart (within the pericardial cavity), esophagus, and trachea.

      • Pericardial Cavity: Encloses the heart.

    • Abdominopelvic Cavity: Inferior to the diaphragm.

      • Abdominal Cavity: Contains the stomach, intestines, spleen, and liver.

      • Pelvic Cavity: Contains the bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum.

IV. Common Names vs. Anatomical Terminology

  • Anatomical terminology ensures precision and universality, while common names can be inconsistent.

    • Common Name: Neck

      • Anatomical Terminology: Cervical

      • Description: Defines the neck.

    • Common Name: Armpit

      • Anatomical Terminology: Axillary

      • Description: Specifies the shoulder girdle.
