Scientific argument

•  Begins with a question

• has a claim that proposes an answer to the question. (hypothesis)

• Has evidence that supports the claim. (data collected during experiment)

• Clearly explains how the evidence supports the claim. (conclusion)

Definition & Purpose

• The Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (C-E-R) Framework is a structured instructional strategy and methodological framework used for formulating, constructing, and evaluating logical arguments in science.

Key Components of the C-E-R Model

• Claim: A statement that provides a definitive answer to a specific research question, typically stated as a single, clear, concise sentence.

• Evidence: The cumulative observations, measurements, facts, and experimental data gathered during an investigation. Must directly relate to and support the claim.

• Reasoning: The logical bridge that connects the claim to the supporting evidence, explaining how and why the data acts as supporting evidence.

Visual Evidence

• Definition: Illustrative representations, diagrams, or visual designs created to summarize, highlight, or visually substantiate the scientific argument or resource content.
