Sovereignty
- Definition: The supreme power or authority to govern within a territory without outside interference.
- Importance: Ensures that a governing body can operate independently within its defined borders, making laws and policies without external intrusion.
Checks and Balances
- Definition: A system where each branch of government (executive, legislative, judicial) can monitor and limit the powers of the others to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful.
- Function: This system is designed to maintain order and prevent tyranny by ensuring that power is not concentrated in any single branch of government.
Federalism
- Definition: A form of government in which power is divided between a central (national) government and smaller (state) governments.
- Example: In the United States, power is shared between the federal government and the respective state governments, allowing for both centralized and localized governance.
Checks and Balances vs. Separation of Powers
