Types of bone
Sutural Bones
Small, irregular bones found between the flat bones of the skull.
Vary in size, shape, and number between individuals.
Pneumatized Bones
Hollow or air-filled bones, reducing weight and aiding in respiration.
Example: Ethmoid bone (contains air cells).
Short Bones
Small, box-like bones that provide stability and support with limited movement.
Example: Carpal bones (wrist), tarsal bones (ankle).
Irregular Bones
Bones with complex shapes that don’t fit other categories.
Example: Vertebrae, sphenoid bone, pelvis.
Flat Bones
Thin, broad, and slightly curved, providing protection and a large surface area for muscle attachment.
Example: Parietal bone, ribs, scapula, sternum.
Long Bones
Elongated bones that support weight and facilitate movement.
Example: Limb bones (femur, humerus, radius).
Sesamoid Bones
Small, round bones embedded in tendons, reducing friction and modifying pressure.
Example: Patella (knee cap)
