Types of bone

  • Sutural Bones

    • Small, irregular bones found between the flat bones of the skull.

    • Vary in size, shape, and number between individuals.

  • Pneumatized Bones

  • Hollow or air-filled bones, reducing weight and aiding in respiration.

  • Example: Ethmoid bone (contains air cells).

  • Short Bones

  • Small, box-like bones that provide stability and support with limited movement.

  • Example: Carpal bones (wrist), tarsal bones (ankle).

  • Irregular Bones

  • Bones with complex shapes that don’t fit other categories.

  • Example: Vertebrae, sphenoid bone, pelvis.

  • Flat Bones

  • Thin, broad, and slightly curved, providing protection and a large surface area for muscle attachment.

  • Example: Parietal bone, ribs, scapula, sternum.

  • Long Bones

  • Elongated bones that support weight and facilitate movement.

  • Example: Limb bones (femur, humerus, radius).

  • Sesamoid Bones

  • Small, round bones embedded in tendons, reducing friction and modifying pressure.

  • Example: Patella (knee cap)
