LITERATURE

Literature presents significant human experiences in various forms like feelings, moods, attitudes, ideas and events in an interrelated series. It presents man’s dreams and aspirations, his joys and sorrows, his triumphs and failures, his wisdom and folly.

Two divisions of Literature - prose and poetry.

Prose is written in ordinary form of language in non-metrical rhythms. Poetry is a composition in verse with rhythm, sound patterns.

Literature is divided into LITERARY PERIODS or spans of time for literature that shares intellectual, linguistic, religious, and artistic influences.

Pre classical period is also called as ^^Homeric period^^ when Greek epics were passed epics orally including Iliad and Odyssey.

Classical period is the ^^Golden age of Greece^^, Greek playwrights and philosophers’ era.

Hellenic period is the ^^spread of Greek language^^ and literature, covers the period of Mediterranean history between the death of Alexander the Great and the emergence of the Roman Empire.

Byzantine period is a conservative literature or the ^^birth of Christianity.^^

FICTION is any imaginative recreation and reconstruction of life while

NON-FICTION is a work of literature that talks about real life stories.

Elements of Fiction

  1. Setting is the place where the story occurs.

  2. Character is any person that appears in a work of fiction.

  3. Plot is the arrangement of events in a story. The parts of the plot are:

    a. Exposition is the background information about the character

    b. Conflict is the problem or opposition in the story

    c. Rising action is the sequence of events which the characters take

    d. Climax is the point towards which the plot and the conflict rise.

    e. Denouement is the point where the conflict is settled.

  4. Theme - is the central idea which a story is constructed.

  5. Point of View - is the manner of telling a story.

Features of Non-fiction

Non-fiction talks about real life stories, therefore, they are presented in the form of timelines, documentaries, charts, graphs, labels. ^^Examples are autobiography, biography, diary, essay, news reports and the likes.^^
