Sc Week 2, Term 4 - Types of rocks

Term 4 Geology Overview

  • Focus: Week 2 of Term 4

Introduction to Geology

  • Everywhere on Earth: Rocks are ubiquitous; they shape our landscapes.

  • Functions of Rock:

    • Forms mountains and ocean basins.

    • Acts as a barrier to the molten magma below.

  • Dynamic Processes:

    • Influenced by water, wind, earthquakes, temperature.

    • Engaged in continuous transformation through scouring, fracturing, movement, and melting.

  • Historical Record:

    • Rocks preserve millions of years of geological changes.

    • Provide insights into the Earth's features (mountains, oceans, canyons).

Success Criteria

  • Learning Intention:

    • Name and identify different rock types.

    • Compare and contrast the properties of these rock types.

    • Describe the formation processes of each rock type.

Types of Rock

  • Three Main Types of Rock:

    1. Igneous

    2. Sedimentary

    3. Metamorphic

  • Formation Processes:

    • Each rock type has unique processes that contribute to its formation and characteristics.

  • In-Class:

    • Complete the Week 2 Revision Activity located in OneNote (due by Week 3).

  • Homework:

    • Prepare an OneNote summary video.
