APES unit 8 terms

  1. Thermal pollution- change in the temperature of a body of water

  2. Anoxic- low/no oxygen conditions in the water

  3. Eutrophication- nutrients build up in water and create pollution and algae blooms

  4. Distillation- boiling ocean water to remove salt and produce freshwater

  5. Reverse Osmosis- using a membrane to filter out salt and produce fresh water

  6. Cultural Eutrophication- human input accelerating the eutrophication process

  7. Aqueduct- canals used to transfer water from one place to another

  8. Oligotrophic- bodies of water with just a few amounts of nutrients

  9. Desalination- removing salt from ocean water to produce fresh water

  10. Thermal Shock- dramatic change in water temperature that harms a species

  11. Solubility- how well a chemical dissolves in a liquid

  12. microplastics - plastic that degrades and can be easily ingested and become part of the food chain

  13. biomagnification - increase of chemical concentrations in an organism higher up in the food chain

  14. noise pollution - loud noise that interferes with an organisms well being and function

  15. North Pacific Garbage Patch- a mixture of plastics and trash found in the ocean

  16. single use plastic- we should reduce all plastic use, particularly this one

  17. slowly degradable pollutants - pollutants that take decades/centuries to break down

  18. Bioaccumulation- the absorption of various chemical in an organism over time

  19. nondegradable pollutants- pollutants that do not break down

  20. persistence- length of time a chemical stays in the environment

  21. endocrine disruptors- chemicals that cause normal hormone disruption

  22. mutagen- chemical that damages DNA

  23. fish ladder- stair like structure designed to help fish get over dams

  24. neurotoxin- chemicals that disrupt the nervous system (brain)

  25. Dike- similar to levees but built by the ocean to protect from flooding

  26. Dam- a barrier that blocks river/stream flow; used to generate electricity

  27. Levee- wall type structure built alongside rivers to protect from flooding

  28. waste water- another name for “dirty” water due to livestock or human activities (sewage/bathing)

  29. Teratogen- chemical that causes embryo/fetus damage

  30. Reservoir- an artificial lake created by a dam

  31. Carcinogen- chemicals that cause cancer

  32. Genetically modified bacteria- used to “eat up” oil spills

  33. pesticide- use in agriculture adds lots of chemicals in the environment

  34. point source- pollution and polluter is identified

  35. Pharmaceutical pollution- refers to the drugs found in our water sources

  36. Hormones and steroids- used by the meat industry and are found in our water sources

  37. Minamata disease- linked to Hg through high levels of fish consumption

  38. nonpoint source- pollutant seen but polluter not identified

  39. Mercury- pollutant mainly from burning coal and gas; can lead to paralysis

  40. homeostasis- stable internal conditions for species so they can grow and reproduce

  41. Lead- pollutant that comes from burning leaded gasoline, burning coal and paint

  42. polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)- damaging industrial compound used to make electronics and plastics'; are persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative chemicals that were once widely used in industrial products but are now banned due to their environmental and health impacts

  43. arsenic- pollutant found naturally in rocks and can contaminate ground water
