The impossibility of conservatism in our era is the impossibility of Canada

Canadians tried to build a conservative nation in age of progress beside America (Author thinks that was #stoopid)

Constitutional arrangments of 1791 & wider argmts of next century only possible bc widespread determination not to become a part of the great republic

British and French both realized they could not be preserved in America, so they cooperated, but they both lacked common ground with America

This intention failed in Canada bc: British; In late 18th century & early 19th century, much of English speaking conservatism was a loyalty based on flow on trade; changed when flow changed, Diefenbaker
