Week 9 Tuto Assessment 2 Notes

Assessment 2 Overview

General Information

  • Assessment 1 marking will be finalized and grades released this week.

  • Assessment 2 builds upon Assessment 1 (BIM health check).

  • It involves using the analysis from the health check to develop a BIM execution plan.

  • The BIM execution plan is strategically placed in the second half of the semester to leverage students' developed understanding of information management in 3D models.

  • The health check in Assessment 1 provides foundational knowledge on extracting information from a 3D model and using Revizto and dRofus for information sharing.

  • Details for Assessment 2 are available on Canva (on campus).

  • The core objective is to develop a BIM execution plan aligning with all learning objectives.

Group Work

  • Groups of 4-5 students, continuing from Assessment 1, unless there are issues.

  • A BIM execution plan template is provided (from the Week 9 tutorial folder).

ISO 19650 International Standard

  • The assessment is based on ISO 19650 international standard.

  • Mark Cohen provided an introduction to this standard.

  • For in-depth understanding, access the standard through the QUT library's electronic database.

  • Australian version: Engineering workbench.

  • British version: British Standard Online.

  • ISO 9650 has 6 parts, each addressing a different theme.

  • The assessment primarily focuses on parts 1 and 2.

  • Part 6 concerns safety (relevant to research in BIM and safety).

  • Develop a BIM execution plan tailored to the QUTS block Kelvin Grove project.

  • Avoid generic wording from the template; selectively tailor the language.

  • AI can be used, but intelligently, ensuring the report doesn't appear AI-generated.

  • Use visuals (figures, tables, images) to enhance communication.

NEI Execution Plan Template

  • The NEI execution plan template has 14 sections (A to 13 are annexures).

  • Determine the necessary information for each section as a group.

  • If a section is deemed irrelevant to the QUT Kelvin Grove project, it can be excluded with justification.

  • Feel free to include various types of annexures, standard or custom.

Queensland Health BIM Execution Plan

  • Queensland Health uses a different BIM execution plan (construction BIM execution plan).

  • Different versions of BIM execution plans exist on the NEPAC website (design, construction, design and construction).

  • These plans serve different purposes at different project phases.

  • Similarities and differences exist between the NEPAC and Queensland Health plans.

  • Queensland Health's plan doesn't specify LOD (level of development); they focus on clear deliverables.

  • The NSE version includes LOD and a detailed responsibility matrix.

  • LOD's value is subjective; some clients prefer it, others don't.

  • For this assignment, use the NSA template as a starting point for considering information to include in different phases to meet client needs.

LOD Matrix

  • An LOD matrix is provided to guide thinking about the level of development/information in the model during different phases (schematic, design development, construction, handover, operation).

  • The unique class system is the most common classification system in Australia.

  • Unique class has systems and subsystems (e.g., structural systems, wall and barrier systems).

  • Consider the required LOD for each system in each phase.

  • LOD 200: Basic representation, inaccurate dimensions.

  • LOD 300: More accurate shape and dimensions.

  • LOD 350: Inclusion of smaller parts.

  • LOD 400: Full detail.

Example : Masonry Wall
  • LOD 200/300: Basic shape and area.

  • LOD 350: Inclusion of linho and beams.

  • LOD 400: Modeling every brick and mortar joint.

  • Consider whether the client requires such detail, given the time and effort involved.

  • From a QS (quantity surveyor) perspective, the square meter area is usually sufficient for cost estimation, making LOD 400 unnecessary.

  • Determine the appropriate LOD for each system; some systems may suffice at LOD 200.

QUTS Block Kelvin Grove Project

  • QUT is both the client and end-user.

  • The building's purpose is for teaching and labs, requiring a healthy and presentable environment for staff and students.

  • Consider the client's (QUT's) needs for managing building facilities.

  • QUT's facilities management team is developing digital twins for existing buildings, using laser scanners to capture carbon emissions.

  • The facilities management vision includes QUT measuring carbon emissions, which requires 3D models and sensors.

  • For the QUTS block Kelvin Grove project, consider future operation and maintenance needs, ensuring compatibility with existing facilities management systems and potential for carbon emission capture.

  • Selected sections regarding carbon emissions in the 3D model should be indicated in the template.

  • Divide systems (architectural, mechanical, structural) among team members to distribute workload.

Assessment 2 Details

  • Worth 50% of the overall grade (Assessment 1 was the other 50%).

  • There are individual and group components.

  • Individual component: 25% total.

Individual Submissions:
  • Selected sections of the BIM execution plan (submission portal link provided).

  • Each student is allocated specific sections of the BIM execution plan.

  • Grading is based solely on the quality of the individual's allocated sections (20% of the total grade).

  • Peer evaluation (5% of the total grade).

  • Feedback is provided to 4 other group members via the "Feedback Fruits" app.

  • Evaluations cover group dynamics, collaboration experience, and areas for future improvement.

  • Failure to complete the peer evaluation results in a loss of 5% of the grade.

Group Component:
  • One submission portal link for the group; one representative submits on behalf of the entire group.

  • Two items to submit:

    • Completed BIM execution plan document (combined sections from each individual).

    • Slide deck for a presentation in Week 13.

  • Presentations will be held during the lecture and tutorial times on Monday of Week 13 (15-20 minutes per group).

  • All group members should present.

Deliverables Length

  • These values are rough estimates. The emphasis is on quality, not quantity.

  • Individual component: 5-10 pages.

  • Combined BIM execution plan: Approximately 50 pages (though real-world BIM execution plans can vary greatly).

  • Slides: Aim for around 10 slides for a 15-minute presentation.

Assessment Rubric

  • Focus on understanding concepts and integrating the analysis of Assessment 1 into the BIM execution plan.

  • Ability to effectively present information in tables or figures.

  • Peer evaluation is worth 5 marks and is determined by feedback from team members.

  • Peer evaluation is a sliding scale.

  • Peer evaluations also have a built-in rubric.

Group Submission

  • The combined BIM execution plan is worth 10% of the grade.

  • Consistency and coherence across all sections are critical.

  • Alignment between different sections (e.g., LOD specifications) is expected.

  • Formatting and structure should be professional, reflecting a client-ready document (for tender).

  • The consistency and coherence of the document are key.

Presentation

  • Content (10%): Demonstrating an understanding of information exchange and articulating information requirements to different parties.

  • Oral Presentation Skills (5%): Engaging and convincing the client to adopt the BIM execution plan; avoid reading from a script.

  • The marks are divided between content and presentation skills to account for scenarios where a group member contributes to content but cannot present.

  • Missing students would still get the 10% content of the presentation marks.

  • Inform the instructor early if there are group dynamic or contribution issues.

Achieving Assessment 2

  • Build on the health check from the schematic design phase and transition to the DD (Design Development) phase.

  • Make major design decisions.

  • Focus on size, element, and coordination and prepare for tendering.

  • Ensure the design complies with the National Construction Code and Australian Standards.

  • Identify use cases.

  • Consider how the client will use the BIM model, e.g., for quantity takeoff, cost planning, embodied carbon calculation, and determine the appropriate LOD.

  • For elemental cost plans, the square meter area may suffice (LOD 300).

  • For embodied carbon calculation, material information is essential.

Extension Policy

  • The assignment due date is May 23rd (Friday), with an automatic 48-hour extension until Sunday.

  • Individual extensions for medical/emergency reasons, if approved by the faculty, apply only to the individual's part.

  • The group submission (combined document) can also get an extension if one member receives an extension.

  • Extensions do not apply to the presentation (Week 13).

  • The group is still expected to present with their slides on Week 13.

  • The content of the slides is expected and is not affected by a particular student’s extension because you show high-level decision and those decisions should be made. This week, next week or the week after next?

  • Inform the instructor of any issues early for intervention and options.

Key Dates & Reminders

  • Assignment due Date: May 23rd.

  • Presentation Date: Week 13 Lecture and Tutorial Times.

  • The submission automatically gets a 48-hour extension.

Timeline & Responsibilities

  • Determine precedence and ownership of items.

  • Establish a clear timeline: which party delivers what information by when.

  • Include the LOD specification in the appendix.

  • Include the master information delivery plan (file types to deliver).

How to Start

  • Revisit individual submissions from Assessment 1 to see different interpretations and categorizations of issues.

  • Have group to come up with a unified approach.

  • Revisit provided information about the QUTS block to see the client’s requirements, the use fullness and function of the building and what the client’s basic requirement.

  • NSE template is a good start, so feel free to delete/use/send sections.

  • The LOD specification must be good, as failure to identify essential information can cause trouble later.

  • Discuss what the client would use the BIM model for, as this will inform what kind of information needs to be in the model.

  • Include (project description, delivery of method, who is going to model, how frequently it will be updated).

This week's activity

  • Come up with a unified approach.

  • Familiarize yourself with different sections in the BIA execution plan template.

  • Section should be interdependent with another section

  • Divide work among your group.

  • Come up with a recommendation

  • Consider different use cases.

  • Complete this excel file by the development stage.

Next week

  • Monday is holiday.

  • A drop-in session for students to ask questions, show work, and get feedback is to be scheduled.

  • Schedule a job in session from 5-7 on Wednesday.

  • For the Week 13 presentation, a schedule will be posted on CloudDeakin.

  • Groups should stay until everyone's presentation is finished.

Extra Information

  • Always have a copy of the LOD.
