Calcification and Calcium Deficiency Disorders
Process of Calcification
- Definition: Calcification is the physiological process where calcium phosphate is deposited, causing bones to become hard.
Types of Calcium Imbalances
- Hypo calcinium:
- Defined as low calcium levels in the body.
- Associated with structural and skeletal disorders including dental weakness, osteoporosis, and rickets.
- Hyper calcinium:
- Defined as high calcium levels in the body.
Disorders Associated with Calcium and Vitamin D Deficiency
- Dental Weakness:
- Characterized by the weakening of dental structures due to insufficient calcium.
- Osteoporosis (Osteo porasis):
- Definition: A condition in which bones become thin and porous.
- Demographics: More prominent in females.
- Etiology: Also caused by aging.
- Rickets:
- Affected Population: Occurs mostly in children.
- Anatomical Location: The upper hip area is affected.
- Physical Manifestations: The legs become weak, causing a child to be unable to walk properly.
- Underlying Cause: Primary cause is vitamin D deficiency.
- Physiological Mechanism: Vitamin D deficiency prevents both vitamin D and calcium from being absorbed fully by the body.
