The new right and education

The new right approach to education reflects many of the ideas of the functionalists perspective.

• Education should train the workforce making sure the most able students have their talents developed and are recruited into the most important jobs whilst others prepare for low level employment

• Education should also socialise young people into a collective value and responsible citizenship, and thereby build social cohesion and social solidarity to ensure a stable united society

However the new right don’t believe the current education system is achieving goals and believe that the reason for this is because it’s run by the state.

Chubb and moe

They argue there should be a free market in education with a range of independently managed schools and colleges which is run like a private business answerable to the local communities parents and students.

They found that pupils from low income families do about 5% better in private schools that in state schools. Based on these findings Chubb and moe call for the introduction of a market system in state education that would put the control in the hands of consumers.

Parents should have a voucher for any school they wish there child to go to.

“Kentucky fried schooling”= run schools in the way that kfc is ran, kfc do a better job at looking after customers. Schools should embrace business like ideas.

Levin + belfield- schools may spend lots of money on advertisement rather than on resources for pupils. Externally= look amazing, Internally= look bad
