  1. Phonology: knowledge of the sound system (what sounds are possible and not possible)

  2. Syntax: the order of elements in a sentence

  3. Morphology: The study of the word formation

  4. Semantics: The meaning of the sentence

  5. Pragmatics: How we use language in context


Second vs. Foreign Language

SL: is spoken outside of the classroom where the students is learning the language

FL: is not spoken outside of the classroom where the student is learning the language
