REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: UNDERSTANDING MUSIC PAST AND PRESENT
Both songs below are meant for large orchestras to perform. Describe each piece being played in a word or two
Barber: “Adagio”: Suspenseful or Sombre. Can be used in times of peril, despair or loss ( Comparison: Avengers infinity war ending or PATW s5 ending theme )
Penderecki: “Threnody”: This piece inspires Tragedy, Malice, Dissonance and Violence.
Listening Modes and Listening Strategies
Distracted Listening: Not paying attention at all
TANGENTIAL LISTENING: Random thought occur while being semi-attentive
METAPHYSICAL LISTENING: Listening to music with semi-attention
SIGNAL LISTENING: Waiting for a certain point of a song your signaling to ( trumpet noises and 808s)
SING-ALONG LISTENING: You know the music by heart whether it be lyrics, sounds, etc.
LYRIC LISTENING: Paying most attention to specifically to the words of a song
PROGRAMMATIC LISTENING: Imagining a situation to go with a musical piece. You do this all the time
ALLUSIVE LISTENING: A musical piece that reminds you of other music.
REMINISCENT LISTENING: Music that reminds you of a certain moment you've lived. Section 80 and the flight to london
IDENTITY LISTENING: Applying terms and categories to sounds
RETENTIVE LISTENING: Fixing a passage in your memory got later music
Fundamental Concepts
Pitch: A musical one that is composed of an organized sound- wave- it is hummable
Interval: The distance between any two pitches , whether in succession ( in tune) or simultaneously (in a chord)
Melody: A succession of single tones, often composed of complementary phrases, that often form a memorable and singable tune.
Harmony: They way melody is accompanied
Texture: ways musical lines and voices interact with each other. Textures can be thin ( monophonic or one music line) or Polyphonic ( thick textures and more than one musical line )
Rhythm ( and tempo): The way music is organized in terms of time in groups of long and short notes
Dynamic: Feature that adds variation of musical volume in terms of its loudness or softness
Timbre: Tone color or tone quality of a song. It's how we identify different sounds of different instruments.
Form: The structure of the phrases and sections within a musical composition and the whole design of a composition.
