13th Amendment: abolished slavery + involuntary servitude except as punishment for a convicted crime
14th Amendment: granted citizenship to all born or naturalized in the US, including formerly enslaved people; gauranteed due process and equal protection under law
15th Amendment: prohibits governments from denying right to vote based on race, color, or previous conditions of servitude
Hiram Revels: first African American to serve in the US Congress; represented Mississippi as a republican; fought segregation
Sharecropping: agricultural system where landowner allows tenant to use land in exchnage for a portion of crops produced
Scalawag: derogatory term used by white southern democrats to insult white southerners who supported Republican Party + federal Reconstruction policies after Civil War
Carpetbagger: derogatory term used by White Southerners to describe Northerners that moved to South during the Reconstruction era
Freedmen’s Bureau: US government agency established by Congress on March 3, 1865
Vigilante: a private citizen or group that takes enforcement into their own hands without legal authority
Radical Republicans: fought to end slavery, southern land reform, and full civil + voting rights for freed African Americans
Andrew Johnson: 17th president of US, assumed presidency after assassination of Abraham Lincoln
Ku Klux Klan (KKK): American supremacist and far right hate group, targeted minorities
