US Gov Unit 4

1. Understand the relevant Article (III) and sections of the US Constitution (Establishment and Jurisdiction) to the Judicial branch and what they mean in context. 


2. Understand the difference between Original and Appellate jurisdictions. 


3. Understand the Appellate structure (“the tree”/graph that you had on your unit 4 quiz) and what the function of each is.


4. Understand the differences between State and Federal jurisdiction and what crimes or legal actions would fit into each category. 


5. Understand all parts of a criminal trial from arrest to final appeal to the SCOTUS.


6. Know the court officers (judge, attorneys, etc) and the parts of the courtroom (jury bench, witness box, etc). 


7. Know the parts of a SCOTUS opinion and how they create Precedents and how these are incorporated into the doctrine of Stare Decisis.


8. Understand the Judiciary Act of 1789, its impact, and how Marbury v. Madison establishes the doctrine of Judicial Review.


9. Understand the importance of McCulloch v. Maryland and how it demonstrates the first major use of Judicial Review in the history of the SCOTUS.
