Depression

depression - a mood disorder which causes a low mood over a period of time/persistent

DSM 5 - 4 types of depression

  • major depressive disorder - severe but often short-term

  • disruptive mood dysregulation - childhood temper tantrums

  • persistent depressive disorder - long term or recurring

  • premenstrual dysphoric disorder - disruption to mood prior/during menstruation

unipolar - one mood

bipolar - alternating between emotions

symptoms:

  • loss of interest in daily activities

  • mood change from baseline

  • impaired function - social, occupation, education

  • hypersomnia/insomnia (too much or too little sleep)

characteristics of depression:

cognitive -

  • concentration diminishes

  • suicidality

  • worthlessness

  • thought of self-harm

  • absolutist thinking

emotional -

  • depressed/low mood

  • decreased interest/pleasure in daily activities

  • guilt/sadness/anger/irritability

  • fatigue/loss of energy

  • low self esteem

behaviour -

  • change in eating habits

  • change in sleep insomnia/hypersomnia

  • change in activity

  • self harm
