Firth (1957): This principle emphasizes situational context. It describes meaning as something fundamentally based on the use of language within specific, identifiable contexts.
Halliday: This scholar developed the framework of the seven functions of language, which are based on the various stages of language usage observed in children.

Language has an instrumental function when its primary goal is to communicate to respond to the specific needs of the speaker.
It is used to express and identify the speaker's preferences, desires, and decisions.
In practical application and actual experience, the instrumental function is commonly used for:
- Problem-solving.
- Gathering materials.
- Role-playing or dramatization (pagsasadula).
- Persuasion (panghihikayat).

Statement A: "Sa palagay ko, kailangan na nating magpahinga muna" (In my opinion, we need to rest first).

The regulatory function of language refers to its capacity to influence and control the behavior of others.
A speaker utilizes the power of language to persuade, command, or make requests of the person they are talking to or anyone in their immediate surroundings.
The regulatory function is frequently observed in actual experiences involving:
- Providing directions or instructions (panuto).
- Establishing or communicating laws (batas).
- Teaching or instruction (pagtuturo).

Direct influence is often seen in advertisements and marketing.
Questions for consideration regarding regulatory impact:
- What is the effect of these advertisements on you?
- How are you controlled by the taglines used in these advertisements?

Language functions heuristically when it is used for learning and discovery to acquire knowledge about the environment.
This function is active when a person seeks information to understand the world around them.
In actual experience, the heuristic function is manifested in activities such as:
- Investigations.
- Questioning.
- Research (pananaliksik).
