Not only is art “Historical,” but our understanding of it is too.
The way which we perceive art is itself conditioned by art and technology
With film, we can understand art as a process, not simply a finished “product” or artifact
… to “demystify” it
art is now seen as a product of labor
The aura of art has its origins in ritual
… art has always had a social function
However, due to technology (reproduction), we can increasingly art works “out of context”
which also affects how they are understood
There has always been a “tension” between the “cult value” and “exhibtion value” of art
With photography and film, the exhibition value begings to surpass the cult value
But in film and photography and film, there is no unique original, … “no aura”
Because of this, film and photography is not “art” in the traditional sense
they have changed the function of art
