  • Not only is art “Historical,” but our understanding of it is too.

  • The way which we perceive art is itself conditioned by art and technology

  • With film, we can understand art as a process, not simply a finished “product” or artifact

    • … to “demystify” it

    • art is now seen as a product of labor

  • The aura of art has its origins in ritual

    • … art has always had a social function

  • However, due to technology (reproduction), we can increasingly art works “out of context”

    • which also affects how they are understood

  • There has always been a “tension” between the “cult value” and “exhibtion value” of art

  • With photography and film, the exhibition value begings to surpass the cult value

  • But in film and photography and film, there is no unique original, … “no aura”

  • Because of this, film and photography is not “art” in the traditional sense

    • they have changed the function of art
