Attention span is often measured using this formula:

Attention Span (seconds) = Age (in years) × 2-5

This means that children can typically focus for 2-5 minutes per year of age on a single task. For example:

  • A 4-year-old child might maintain attention for 8-20 minutes

  • A 10-year-old child might maintain attention for 20-50 minutes

  • Adults typically have attention spans of 10-20 minutes for focused learning activities

However, attention span varies based on motivation, interest in the task, time of day, and individual differences.

Factors that impact attention span include:

Selective Attention

Selective attention is the ability to focus on specific information while ignoring other stimuli. Types of selective attention include:

  • Visual selective attention - Focusing on specific visual stimuli while ignoring others in the visual field

  • Auditory selective attention - Focusing on specific sounds or voices while filtering out background noise (e.g., the cocktail party effect)

  • Spatial selective attention - Directing attention to a particular location in space

  • Feature-based selective attention - Focusing on specific features or attributes of stimuli (color, shape, etc.)

  • Object-based selective attention - Attending to entire objects rather than individual features

  • Temporal selective attention - Focusing on stimuli that occur at specific points in time

  • Broadbent's Filter Theory - Proposes that information is filtered early in processing

  • Treisman's Attenuation Theory - Suggests that unattended information is attenuated rather than completely filtered out
