Goods and Services
- Goods: tangible items that satisfy wants and provide a benefit
- Services: actions performed for a consumer or customer
- Examples: Goods (food, clothing, houses); Services (repair, cleaning, haircuts, tutoring)
Factors of Production
- Definition: resources required to produce goods and services
- Four main categories: Land (natural resources), Labor, Capital, Entrepreneurship
- Purpose: combine resources to create goods/services
Land / Natural Resources
- Definition: resources found in the environment
- Examples: water, oil, wood, plants, animals
- Role: input to production (e.g., fishing for food, beekeeping for honey, crude oil refined to gasoline)
Labor
- Definition: physical and mental effort; education, skills, and abilities
- Examples: mechanic, stylist, doctor
- Role: essential input to production
Capital
- Definition: human-made inputs used in the production process
- Subtypes:
- Physical Capital: machines, tools, facilities
- Human Capital: knowledge and skills from education and training
- Examples: automated production lines; storage facilities; banks’ cash assets used to loan (illustrative of capital's role in finance and production)
Entrepreneurship
- Definition: individuals who decide how to combine resources to create goods and services
- Role: risk takers; develop original ideas; start businesses; create new industries; pursue profit
