Lab Safety Procedures

  • Always follow the instructions given by the teacher.

  • Read all of the directions before starting a lab.

  • You should be on your best behavior during a lab— horseplay is not tolerated and can be dangerous.

  • All accidents must be reported to the teacher.

  • Be sure to know the location and use of all safety equipment.

  • Always carry sharp objects with the sharp end pointed down.

  • Always cut away from yourself when using a scalpel or other sharp objects.

  • Do not eat or drink during a lab— never taste substances without the teacher’s permission.

  • Check all of your lab equipment before starting— report any damaged items to the teacher.

Clothing & Equipment

  • Tie back long hair and secure all baggy clothing (roll up sleeves, take off sweater, etc.) to reduce the risk of accidents— wear a lab apron/coat if needed.

  • Wear proper shoes— closed shoes are the best!

  • Always wear protective goggles when instructed by the teacher or while working with heat, chemicals, or sharp objects.

Chemicals & Substances

  • Always waft when instructed to smell a substance— never directly smell anything.

  • All chemicals and substances should be returned and left in the room at the end of the lab.

  • Always add acid last when mixing acid and other substances.

  • Use the eyewash station or safety shower for chemical splashes in the eye or skin.

Heat Sources

  • Never leave a heat source unattended— hot plate, Bunsen burner, lit candle, etc.

  • When heating a test tube, always point the end away from yourself and others.

  • Do not place hot glassware into cold water— it will shatter.

Lab Station

  • Always keep a neat and clean lab area— a cluttered area can increase the risk of accidents.

  • Dispose of trash in the correct container— most solids can go in a trash can and most liquids can be washed down the sink.

  • Never place unused chemicals back into their original container— this can cause contamination.

  • Clean all lab equipment and wash your hands at the end of a lab.
