MEMORY OVERVIEW
Most information entering sensory memory is forgotten.
Information we focus on may transition into short-term memory (STM).
STM Definition: The location for small amounts of information temporarily held for more than a few seconds, usually less than one minute.
Information can last longer through rehearsal.
Possible transition to long-term memory (LTM).
LTM Definition: Memory storage capable of holding information for days, months, and years.
Memory is conceptualized in stages:
Sensory Memory
Short-Term Memory
Long-Term Memory
Not all information passes through all stages; most is forgotten.
Transition from shorter-duration memory to longer-duration memory is contingent on attention and processing.
SENSORY MEMORY
Sensory memory provides a brief "snapshot" of the surrounding environment, enabling focus on important details.
Duration: Information is often forgotten quickly, lasting a few seconds; may transfer to short-term memory for more durable recall.
WHAT IT IS:
Senses continuously intake vast information regarding sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing.
Remembering every detail is impractical.
Types of Sensory Memory:
Echoic Memory:
Definition: Auditory memory that lasts for about three to four seconds.
Example: Hearing a school bell ring.
Haptic Memory:
Definition: Tactile memory of touch, lasting approximately two seconds.
Example: The sensation of raindrops on skin.
Iconic Memory:
Definition: Visual memory of images, typically lasting one-quarter to one-half of a second.
Example: The fleeting image of a car passing on the road.
EXPLICIT MEMORY

Regions of the Brain: Explicit memories depend on the hippocampus and amygdala.
Types of Explicit Memories:
Episodic Memory:
Definition: Long-term memories of personal life experiences, consciously recalled.
Examples: Graduation day, yesterday’s events, childhood recollections.
Semantic Memory:
Definition: Memory of facts, general knowledge, names, and concepts, often learned in educational settings.
Explicit memory is frequently referred to as declarative memory.
IMPLICIT MEMORY

Definition: Implicit memory represents the second type of long-term memory, wherein information is stored without conscious or intentional recollection.
Characteristics: Implicit memory is automatic, unconscious, and unintentional.
Regions of the Brain: Implicit memories often rely on the basal ganglia and cerebellum.
Types of Implicit Memory:
Classical Conditioning:
Definition: Learning to associate neutral stimuli (e.g., a sound) with an unconditioned stimulus (e.g., food) to elicit a response (e.g., salivation).
Example: Hearing a bell and salivating in anticipation of food.
Procedural Memory:
Definition: Memories of how to perform tasks without conscious recall.
Examples: Knowing how to ride a bike, use utensils, or navigate a familiar area.
Implicit memory is also called non-declarative memory.
PROSPECTIVE MEMORY
Definition: Refers to the ability to remember and perform intended actions in the future.
Often described as “remembering to remember.”
Allows individuals to adhere to plans and obligations.
Neurological Basis: Believed to involve the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus for spontaneous recollection.
Examples of Prospective Memory:
Remembering to visit a friend for dinner.
Taking morning medication.
Buying a gift for a birthday.
FLASHBULB MEMORIES
Definition: Vivid and detailed memories of emotionally significant events.
Characteristics:
Typically experienced with photographic detail.
May include contextual details such as actions during the event or the moment of learning about it.
Durability: Flashbulb memories can endure long-term but may not reflect complete accuracy.
Examples:
Recall of exact circumstances surrounding the 9/11 attacks.
Personal memories of impactful moments, such as a sudden loss of a family member.
