Became King of Scotland when he was 1

Became King of Scotland and England in 1603

King James 1 was the first stuart monarch.

He was the son of Mary the queen of Scots and was Elizabeth Tudor’s succesor.

He had a bad childhood,- his Father (Lord Darnley) was killed and his mother was suspected of being involved. She was then forced to flee and was imprisoned and was executed in 1587.

He also suffered from artheritis and other illnesses.

James was also a brought up as protestant even though his mother was Catholic. Catholic priests were forced to leave under his reign

Was James 1 a good king?

He was well educated and quick minded.

He wrote a book claiming smoking was bad.

He managed to keep C of E united despite oppisition.

Was James 1 a bad king?

He didn’t get on well with parliament

He spent too much money

May have sparked the civil war because he made a comment on the HOC.
