Definition

  • Also known as the basal layer.

Functions

  • Cellular reproduction occurs via mitosis (one cell divides into two).

  • Produces two identical cells: one remains in the basal layer, the other moves upward.

Characteristics

  • Thickest layer of the epidermis in young skin.

  • Cells are large, supple, and contain a high percentage of water.
