Definition
Also known as the basal layer.
Functions
Cellular reproduction occurs via mitosis (one cell divides into two).
Produces two identical cells: one remains in the basal layer, the other moves upward.
Characteristics
Thickest layer of the epidermis in young skin.
Cells are large, supple, and contain a high percentage of water.
