==Homogenization::== - Erases the differences among people and as a result they become increasingly similar. Negative impact of globalization; example is American media
==Acculturation::== - the culture changes that occur when two culture accomodate or adapt to each other’s worldview. Positive impact of globalization.
==Accommodation::== - Involves accepting and creating space for oneanother. May affect the customs, traditions, technologies, values, beliefs and languages of both cultures.
==Hybridization::== - combining elements of one culture with those of another. Can create new cultural products that enable people to connect with oneanother in new ways.
Global Village==::== term coined by Marshall McLuhan in regards to the growing connections among people around the world.
==Globalization::== - The process by which the world’s citizens are becoming more connected and interdependent.
Globalization==::==- the world becoming smaller and more complicated.
==Glocalization::== - being global and local at the same time; e.g. member of local communities whilist being member of the world as a whole → McLuhan
==Standardization::== - the world’s processes becoming universal practice; e.g. American media becoming more standardized within other countries.
Cultural Protectionism / Cultural content laws==::== - laws designed with the intent of protecting cultures in various aspects of life, including the media. e.g. the CRTC and Canadian content quotas.
==Treaties== - formal, legally binding agreements between countries, e.g. USMCA/NAFTA
Consumerist==::==- people who believing in giving consumers power rather than large transnational corporations.
==Forces for globalization::== - container ships, digitization, spread of information and media, the Internet
==Forces against globalization::== - nationalist attitudes against globalization, climate change, opposition to global financial institutions and transnational corporations.
Digitization:: the process of the world becoming more digital through the advent of technology such as the mobile phone and the World Wide Web.
==Coca-Cola Colonization and Americanization::== - the process of American influence spreading worldwide through the effects of transnational corporations and the media.
==Marginalization::== - various ethnic and cultural groups becoming a minority of the population; being forced into the margins as a small population.
==Concentration::== - the media being monopolized by large corporations, reducing competition and variety of opinion. Considered negative, e.g. Sinclair Media and CanWest Global Communications
==Convergence::== - media combining into a central source such as the Internet, providing easier and more comprehensive access to media. Variety of opinion and competition is retained, however is more accessible, as such is positive.
Domestic==::==- affairs that are typically secluded to one country, e.g. Canadian politics and small businesses
International==::==- affairs that are not secluded and occur globally, e.g. Del Monte and Chiquita
==Cultural revitalization== ==::==- cultures reaffirming and promoting their individual and collective identities.
==Cultural imperialism::== - the imposition by one usually politically or economically dominant community of various aspects of its own culture onto another non-dominant community.
Economic Globalization==::==- the globalization and standardization of the world’s economic and financial processes through bodies such as the WTO, World Bank and treaties such as USMCA/NAFTA
==Cultural Globalization::== - the spread of cultures, identities, languages and customs across the world.
==Bill 101::== - a bill that mandates that all signs in Quebec must have French as the dominant language.
==Collective identity::== - an identity shared by members of a collective (the groups you belong to)
Universalization of Pop Culture- the spread of pop culture globally through forces such as the Internet and media. Our individual choices also help determine what is pop culture; this subsequently affects our identity.
==Segregation::== - the division of people for various attributes.
==Capitalism::== - the economic system where economic freedom prevails. Subsequently, this has less social safety nets but is very effective at generating wealth.
==Four Dimensions of Globalization::== - social, political, economic, environmental, (technological-ish)
==CRTC::== - Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Corporation, the government body responsible for the regulation of Canada’s telecom provides as well as Canada’s cultural content laws.
Free trade==::== the free movement of goods between nations with limited or no restrictions, such as tariffs.
==Protectionism::== - the economic policy of restricting imports of certain goods through measures such as tariffs, in an attempt to protect domestic products from foreign products.
Digital divide==::==- the divide that exists in respect to access to digital technology. e.g. lack of opportunity
==Urbanization::== - the process of the world becoming urbanized, in which people are moving closer together in cities/towns/villages.
