OSHO – Zorba the Buddha: Study Notes
Preface
- Osho’s texts are arranged around familiar male archetypes (Adam, the Robot, the Beggar, etc.) to help men recognise conditioned behaviour and transcend it.
- Archetypes are NOT fixed; they are diagnostic labels meant to be seen through.
- Ultimate goal: go beyond personality into authentic, essential self via meditation and awareness.
Introduction – Why Men Also Need Liberation
- Men, like women, remain un-liberated; are damaged by past values, guilt and division (body vs soul, science vs religion, man vs woman).
- Society conditions boys for competition (money, status, power) at cost of spontaneity, play and heart.
- Education dulls body sensitivity; men suppress their innate “inner woman”.
- Osho proposes a “third way”: meditation – balances male & female poles within, catalyses inner growth, fosters respect for body, mind, soul.
- Global crises demand inner revolution: outward revolutions failed.
- Key understanding: every man contains Eve, every woman contains Adam; wholeness requires integrating the repressed polarity.
- Vision of the New Man: rebel, mask-free, compassionate, willing to risk crucifixion rather than hypocrisy.
Adam (archetype of the unconscious ego)
- Adam’s “No” created ego & history; each child repeats Edenic exile (loss of unconscious joy).
- Happiness lost because children are diverted from their own potentials to others’ expectations.
- Society teaches comparison → chronic dissatisfaction ("greener grass" syndrome).
- Remedy: root into one’s unique potential; refuse robotic conformity.
- True contentment arises from self-love.
- Conditioning diverts self-love outward (parents, priests, nation); creates beggars for approval.
- Lovers fight because two empty beggars expect to be filled.
- A rightly raised child keeps original self-love, overflows, shares independently.
- Prophets & messiahs exploit man’s induced unworthiness; genuine freedom begins with self-love.
The Victim
- Core problem: split between “is” and “should”.
- Ideals turn man against his present reality → repression / neurosis.
- Therapy: radical acceptance (“I am sadness” etc.); live each feeling 100 % without moral commentary.
- Pain comes from interpretation, not fact.
- Truth = immediate experience; living it instantly liberates.
Repression vs. Expression (Tantric message)
- Repression = slow suicide; expression = life.
- Natural anger & sexuality are paired; suppressing one dulls the other.
- Society cripples man (bonsai strategy) by cutting roots of instinct to keep him obedient.
The Robot
- Ordinary man is a programmed machine (Gurdjieff).
- Lives by reactions, not responses; freedom begins with awareness of automatic habits.
- Techniques: do something opposite/unexpected to de-automatise (vipassana walk, odd behaviour, Gurdjieff shocks).
- Goal: spontaneous action, not mechanical reaction.
The Animal / Sex
- Man is animal + potential god.
- Sex itself is neutral, can evolve to love / prayer via awareness (Tantra).
- Repression by priests produced pornography, guilt, “old perverts”.
- Healthy trajectory: full sexual living (peak 14–42), then natural transcendence into love / compassion.
Self-Love & ‘Beggar’ Archetype
- Attention-seeking stems from no inner centre.
- Media, medals, status strips feed ego but keep man dependent.
- Meditation introduces intrinsic joy → ends craving for attention.
Boyfriend / Son / Mother Issues
- True maturation = leaving parental psychological womb; respectful rebellion.
- Man’s fear of women often rooted in domineering mother → homosexuality or misogyny; needs awareness & integration.
The Slave
- World wants efficient robots; individuality threatens institutions.
- Masks of friendship, love, prayer are misused as shields.
- New man drops masks, accepts risk of being lone individual versus herd.
The Monk vs. the New Man
- Traditional celibate monk represses life; contributes nothing except disease (AIDS).
- Osho advocates celebration, feasting, Zorba-attitude PLUS Buddha-awareness.
Politician / Priest / Scientist
- All manipulate fear and guilt to gain followers.
- True revolution is inner; outer revolutions only replace one oppression with another.
- Science of the head must be balanced by poetry of the heart and silence of being.
Entrepreneur
- Business mind seeks profit; meditation mind is playful.
- Keep business as livelihood but preserve inner play & meditation to prevent life becoming transaction.
American Mind
- Extreme material success + inner poverty.
- Needs heart (poetry, meditation) to balance head & body.
Aging
- Natural course: sex wanes ~42; energy turns to love/compassion.
- Repressed societies produce “old perverts” because desires remain even when body cannot fulfil.
- Meditation transmutes leftover desires into flowering wisdom.
Master & Disciple (Eastern sense)
- ‘Master’ = one who has mastered himself; disciple = learner, not follower.
- Connection is through trust/love, not belief.
- Goal is disciple’s freedom; master prepares ground, doesn’t enslave.
Zorba the Buddha – The Synthesis
- Zorba = embodiment of body-earth celebration; Buddha = embodiment of consciousness.
- Past either repressed body (East) or soul (West).
- New man integrates both: “dance of Zorba with the eyes of Buddha”.
- Freedom, love, awareness, humour, creativity, risk-taking – hallmarks of the rebel/new man.
Practical Keys for Becoming the New Man
- Meditate daily; de-automatise habits.
- Accept & express feelings without moral overlay.
- Celebrate body: healthy food, dance, sex without guilt.
- Integrate inner woman/man; respect both poles.
- Reject borrowed ideals; live moment-to-moment.
- Risk authenticity over social security.
- Use outer work (business, science) but keep inner play central.
- Grow old wisely: let desires fade, cultivate compassion & silence.
- Seek living masters; aim to become one – share light.
- Self-love + Awareness = Inner Revolution
- Repression→Perversion;Expression→Transcendence
- Head (science)+Heart (art)+Being (silence)=Wholeness
- Zorba (body)+Buddha (consciousness)=New Man
