Lesson 2: Preterite Indefinido (Past Indefinite)
- 1- The Preterite Indefinido tense of a verb is formed from the root of the verb in the present tense plus endings indicating the Preterite Indefinido tense.
- 2- There are special endings for verbs in the first group, and special endings for verbs in both the second and third groups.
- 3- The Preterite Indefinido expresses an event that has been completed and finished, and may have occurred a long or short time ago (it is equivalent to the aorist simple past tense in ancient Greek). An example of this:
"I had orange juice."
Yo tomé un zumo de naranjas - 4- We emphasize that the Preterite Indefinido refers to an event and not to time in the usual sense, however, we can remember the existence of words and expressions that indicate the use of the verb in the past tense, most of which are explained in the following table:
