Types of Dance Mixers:
Alahoy Dance -
- Seen at festivals and celebrations
- Distinguished by vibrant, energetic movement including clapping, stomping, and jumping
- Term “alahoy” has no literal definition/translation, but could be translated as “hello”, “goodbye”, or “see you later”
- Heel and Toe Change Step: Heel in front, point toe bwd, step close, step
Kamayan Dance -
- Involves shaking hands with your partner
- Involves making two circles, wherein the inner circle the boys face counter-clockwise and in the outer circle the girls face clockwise
Kaibigan Dance -
- Involves square and round dancing to make a comfortable environment
- 4 steps: Hop step, Swing step, Walking Clockwise, Do-si-do
- Do-si-do: popular square dancing step
Apat-apat Dance -
- Filipino folk dance from Batangas
- Joyous dance typically done at weddings, festivals, and other special occasions
- Distinguished by fast and energetic motions
- Accompanied by Filipino traditional music
Lesson 2
Baroque Music - a style of Western art music (1600-1750)
Followed by the Renaissance era, and then the Classical era
The word “Baroque” comes from the French word “Barrocco” meaning irregularly shaped pearl
The Roman Catholic Church encouraged its development
Characteristics: High level of ornamentation, Intricate and complex details, Heavily contrasting elements, High movement, Exaggerated motion and voice
Vocal Styles and Forms -
Opera
Dramatic form of theatre including scenery, props, and costumes
Actors are trained singers
Accompanied by an orchestra that is coordinated by a conductor
Oratorio
Religious and large-scale work
Involves orchestra and voices
Performed without costumes, scenery, and props
Cantata
From Italian word “cantare” meaning “to sing”
An epistemology
A musical composition intended to be sung for wakes
Performed with voices and instruments
