LOs revision - visual pathway

how is light converted to chemical and then electrical signal in retina

  • Retinal has rods + cones, bipolar, ganglion.

  • rods - rhodopsin. conformational change - turns cGMP into GMP. stops glutamte release, depolarises cells. = electircal.

Describe role of rods, cones, bipolar nd ganglion cells

  • rods - b/w vision photreceptor

  • cones - colour vision photoreceptor

  • bipolar - collate info from rods / cones, goves to ganglion. 1st in neural pathway

  • ganglion - make up optic disk. role in sleep / wake cycles. 2nd neurone in pathway, takes infor from multiple biplolar cells.

Describe visual pathway from retina → cortex

photoreceptor → bipolar → ganglion → optic nerve, through optic chiasm, thalamus, lateral genicualte nucleus → cortex
