Naming Benzene Derivatives

  • Different Groups: Alphabetize substituent names before "benzene".

  • Common Root: Name as a derivative of the monosubstituted benzene.

  • Three or More Substituents:

    • Number the ring to achieve the lowest possible numbers.

    • Alphabetize substituent names.

  • Substituents as Common Roots: Name as a derivative of the monosubstituted benzene; the common root is position 1.
