Learning: Definition and Types
Learning: A relatively permanent change in behavior or knowledge that results from experience.
Involves acquiring skills and knowledge through experience.
Can occur through both conscious and unconscious processes.
Associative Learning: When an organism makes connections between stimuli or events that occur together in the environment.
Helps organisms adapt to their environment.
Approaches to Learning (Behaviorism):
Classical Conditioning: Learning to predict events we already like or don’t like by noticing other events or sensations that happen first.
Operant Conditioning: Learning when our actions have consequences.
Observational Learning: Learning when we watch what other people do.
Unlearned Behaviors: Instincts and Reflexes
Innate Behaviors: Organisms are born with instincts and reflexes, which help them adapt.
Reflexes:
Motor/neural reactions to a specific stimulus.
Simpler than instincts.
Involve activity of specific body parts.
Involve primitive centers of the Central Nervous System (CNS) (e.g., spinal cord and medulla).
Example: Human babies are born with a sucking reflex.
Instincts:
Behaviors triggered by a broader range of events (e.g., aging, change of seasons).
More complex than reflexes.
Involve movement of the organism as a whole (e.g., sexual activity, migration).
Involve higher brain centers.
How Learning Happens (Beyond Language/Words)
Learning from Experience:
When we learn to predict events we already like or don’t like by noticing other events or sensations that happen first.
When our actions have consequences.
When we watch what other people do.
Learning by Association:
When two stimuli (events or sensations) tend to occur together or in sequence.
When actions become associated with pleasant or aversive results.
When two pieces of information are linked.
Associative Learning: Classical Conditioning
Definition: A process by which we learn to associate stimuli and, consequently, to anticipate events.
Involves learning to associate environmental stimuli that repeatedly occur together or in sequence.
Mechanism: After repeated exposure to two stimuli occurring in sequence, we associate those stimuli with each other. Our natural response to one stimulus can then be triggered by the new, predictive stimulus.
Example: Seeing lightning (Stimulus ) and then hearing thunder (Stimulus ). After repetition, seeing lightning alone can trigger the response of covering ears to avoid the sound of thunder.
Ivan Pavlov's Discovery
Research on the digestive system of dogs unexpectedly led to the discovery of classical conditioning.
Observation: Dogs salivated not only at the taste of food but also at the footsteps of lab assistants.
Realization: Organisms have two types of responses to their environment: unconditioned (unlearned) and conditioned (learned).
Core Components of Classical Conditioning
Before Conditioning:
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS): A stimulus that elicits a reflexive response (e.g., food).
Unconditioned Response (UCR): A natural, unlearned reaction to a stimulus (e.g., salivation in response to food).
Neutral Stimulus (NS): A stimulus that does not naturally elicit a response (e.g., a bell before conditioning).
Example: Food (UCS) Salivation (UCR); Bell (NS) No Salivation.
During Conditioning:
The NS and UCS are paired repeatedly.
Example: Bell (NS) Food (UCS) Salivation (UCR).
After Conditioning:
Conditioned Stimulus (CS): The stimulus that elicits a response after repeatedly being paired with an unconditioned stimulus (e.g., the bell).
Conditioned Response (CR): The behavior caused by the conditioned stimulus (e.g., salivation to the bell).
Example: Bell (CS) Salivation (CR).
Higher-Order Conditioning
Definition: An established conditioned stimulus (CS) is paired with a new neutral stimulus (the second-order stimulus), so that eventually the new stimulus also elicits the conditioned response, without the initial CS being presented.
Example: A cat conditioned to salivate to an electric can opener (CS). If a squeaky cabinet door (new NS) is repeatedly paired with the can opener, the cat will eventually salivate (CR) at the sound of the squeaky cabinet door alone (now a CS).
General Processes in Classical Conditioning
Acquisition:
The initial period of learning when an organism learns to connect a neutral stimulus and an unconditioned stimulus.
Usually requires a very short time interval between the NS and UCS and multiple repetitions.
Exception: Conditioning can sometimes occur with longer intervals or a single pairing (e.g., taste aversion).
Extinction:
A decrease in the conditioned response when the UCS is no longer presented with the CS.
Example: If the bell (CS) is repeatedly presented without food (UCS), the dog will eventually stop salivating (CR) to the bell.
Spontaneous Recovery:
The return of a previously extinguished conditioned response following a rest period.
Curve of Acquisition, Extinction & Spontaneous Recovery
Acquisition: Rising curve shows CR strengthening quickly with repeated CS-UCS pairing.
Extinction: Decreasing curve shows CR weakening when only CS is presented.
Spontaneous Recovery: After a break, the CR reappears.
Distinguishing Between Stimuli
Stimulus Discrimination:
When an organism learns to respond differently to various stimuli that are similar.
Example: A dog discriminates between a specific bell sound signaling food and a similar bell sound that does not.
Stimulus Generalization:
When an organism demonstrates the conditioned response to stimuli that are similar to the conditioned stimulus.
Example: Disliking a specific spider leads to disliking all spiders.
Habituation:
Learning not to respond to a stimulus that is presented repeatedly without change.
As a stimulus is repeated, we learn not to focus our attention on it.
Applications of Classical Conditioning
Human Health and Well-being: Pavlov’s principles influence areas like consciousness, motivation, emotion, health, psychological disorders, and therapy.
Addicts are counseled to avoid stimuli (e.g., people, settings) that trigger cravings.
Pairing a taste with a drug influencing immune responses can lead to an immune response from the taste alone.
