Jesus' Crucifixion

Matthew 27

  1. That morning, the chief priests and elders decided to put Jesus to death

    1. So they tied him up and took him to Pontius Pilate, the governor

  2. Judas, in the meantime, starts to realize what exactly he’s done

    1. He attempts to return the money to the priests saying he’s sinned by betraying innocent blood

    2. The priests deny the money asking what is that to them? Why should they care since they don’t believe Jesus is who he says he is?

    3. Judas throws the money to the ground and ran out the temple

    4. He hung himself

    5. The priests take the money and decide to bury it, feeling it is not right to keep money gained in blood

    6. They buried it in a cemetery for strangers, the field of blood.

  3. Jesus before Pontius

    1. Pontius asks Jesus if he is the king of the Jews

      1. Jesus says if Pontius says it

        1. Mind you, Jesus refused to answer the priests during this time with Pontius

      2. Pontius asks if Jesus knows how many things are testified against him. He’s in shock that a man is so calm after having such harshness against him to have him killed ‘

        1. Jesus stays silent and Pontius marvels at his resilience and calmness

  4. Pontius tries to get Jesus out

    1. Pontius tries to use the custom of releasing one prisoner at the public’s wish to free Jesus

    2. Pontius sees through the priests envy of Jesus as want for his murder rather than genuine care for the faith and people

    3. So Pontius brings out Jesus and a murderer named Barrabas

    4. Pontius is sitting on the judgment seat

      1. He has the power to just release Jesus, he knows he should, but he is half-assing it (for lack of better words)

      2. “Going along with the court system” to appease the many rather than just releasing Jesus

      3. Even his wife is having dreams of innocent Jesus in the horrible state and it frightens her enough for her to want Pontius to separate himself from him

        1. Matthew 27:19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

  5. Jesus vs Barrabas

    1. The priests convinced the crowd to vote for Barrabas

    2. So when Pontius asks the crowd who to release, they say Barrabas

    3. When he asks what he should do with Jesus, they say crucify him

    4. Pontius doesn’t like this! He asks the crowd why but they push onto crucify him

      1. Matthew 27:23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

    5. Pontius still has the power to just release Jesus! But instead he washes his hands and tries to convince himself he is clean from innocent blood. This is just a work of the court.

      1. Matthew 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

    6. Pontius allows Jesus’ body to be returned to his family and buried
