Functions of the Lymphatic System

  • The lymphatic system is a specialized component of the circulatory system (Unit 6), which serves as the primary transportation system within the body.

  • Fluid Balance and Return: The system is responsible for taking excess tissue fluid and returning it to the circulatory system. This connection between the lymphatic and circulatory systems occurs at the subclavian veins.

  • Fat Absorption: Products derived from fat digestion are absorbed into specialized sacs called lacteals. These lacteals then transport these products into the lymph vessels and nodes.

  • Production of Immune Cells: Lymph nodes are key sites for the production of lymphocytes.

  • Filtration and Purification: Lymph nodes function as biological filters that trap bacteria and other debris, thereby helping to purify body fluids.

Key Structures of the Lymphatic System

  • Spleen:   - Identified as the largest single mass or "lump" of lymphatic tissue in the human body.   - Responsible for the production of lymphocytes and the storage of excess blood.   - Blood Pressure Regulation: The spleen plays a role in managing blood pressure. If blood pressure becomes too high, the spleen stores blood to help lower it. Conversely, if blood pressure is low, the spleen contracts to release stored blood into the circulatory system, causing blood pressure to rise.   - Blood Filtration: It serves as a filter for the blood by identifying and removing red blood cells that are old, malformed, or damaged.

  • Thymus Gland:   - A bi-lobed structure that is essential for the maturation process of lymphocytes.   - Characteristically becomes smaller in size as an individual ages.

  • Tonsils and Appendix:   - These structures contain lymphoid tissue and are believed to assist in the removal of invading organisms and viruses.

  • Lymphatic Tissue (General):   - Generally functions to produce lymphocytes and, in specific organs like the spleen, stores excess blood.

Transport and Filtration Structures

  • Lymph Vessels:   - Structurally similar to veins, these vessels transport fluids (containing no red blood cells) in only one direction.   - The network includes lymph veins and capillaries; however, it is noted that there are NO lymph arteries.

  • Lymph Nodes:   - Small oval or round tissue structures that filter lymph fluids.   - They can become noticeably swollen during infection.

  • Lacteals:   - Specific sacs found within the villi of the digestive system that absorb the products of fat digestion.

  • Valves:   - These are necessary to prevent the fluid within the lymph vessels from flowing back towards the feet, ensuring unidirectional flow.

Infection Fighting and the Inflammatory Response

  • Immediate Response to Foreign Substances:   - The system attacks foreign substances such as bacteria or viruses.   - Phagocytosis: Monocytes and neutrophils move to the site of infection through the capillary network and engulf bacteria or viruses in an amoeboid fashion.   - Pus Formation: Pus is composed of dead tissue, cells, bacteria, and a combination of both dead and living neutrophils.

  • Antibody-Antigen Interaction:   - Lymphocytes are responsible for producing antibodies.   - Specificity: Each unique antibody is designed to fight a specific antigen.   - Chemical Reaction: Antigen+AntibodyInactive complex\text{Antigen} + \text{Antibody} \rightarrow \text{Inactive complex}

  • Antigens:   - These are blood proteins found on the outer membrane of blood cells.   - The specific type of protein present determines the individual's blood type.

  • Antibodies:   - These are proteins that attack and chemically combine with unwanted substances or proteins.   - This chemical combination leads to a process known as agglutination.
