Proper Handling of Turtles

Proper Handling of Turtles

  • Turtles can be manually lifted and transported using both hands.

DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES:

  1. The handler should grasp the turtle from the sides, ensuring that the body is fully supported.

  2. One hand should support the carapace (top shell) while the other supports the plastron (bottom shell) to provide stability.

  3. Position one hand at the rear of the shell and the other underneath the turtle for balanced lifting.

Important Tips:

  • Avoid Scruffing:

    • Do not hold turtles by their necks or tails, as this can cause injury or stress to the animal.

  • Do not:

    • Tap on the shell or knock it as this can cause stress.

    • Pick up a turtle that you are not comfortable holding – always ensure you can properly support its weight and structure.

    • Never pick a turtle up by its tail; this can lead to serious physical harm.

    • Don't put the animal through a full 360 degrees of revolution (a complete circle) as this can disorient the turtle and may cause injury.
