Mortality Frequency Measures

1. Definition of Mortality

  • Mortality: The state or condition of being subject to death.

2. Mortality Rate

  • A measure of the frequency of occurrence of death in a defined population during a specified interval.

3. Frequently Used Measures of Mortality (CCNIM)

  • Crude Death Rate:

    • Total number of deaths in a specified geographic area divided by the number of population in the same area (multiplied by 100,000).

  • Cause-Specific Death Rate:

    • Number of deaths from a specified cause in a specific geographic area per 100,000 person-years at risk.

  • Neonatal Mortality Rate:

    • Number of neonatal deaths (within 28 days of life) per 1,000 live births.

  • Infant Mortality Rate:

    • Number of deaths of infants under one year old in a given year per 1,000 live births in the same year.

  • Maternal Mortality Rate:

    • Number of maternal deaths within 42 days of pregnancy termination due to complications of pregnancy in a year (multiplied by 100,000).
