7.1 Nature of Thinking
- Definition: Thinking is a higher mental process where we manipulate and analyze acquired or existing information.
- Methods of Thinking: Includes abstracting, reasoning, imagining, problem-solving, judging, and decision-making.
- Characteristics:
- Organized and goal-directed. Consists of planning, recalling previous steps, or inferring new strategies.
- Internal process inferred from external behavior.
- Example: A chess player's thought process can be inferred from their prolonged decision before making a move.
Building Blocks of Thought
- Knowledge Representation: Thinking depends on existing knowledge, represented by images or words (concepts).
- Examples:
- Travelling by road, recalling mental images of streets from previous visits.
- Deciding to buy a storybook based on knowledge of authors and themes.
Mental Images
- Definition: A mental image is a representation of a sensory experience facilitating thinking about things, places, or events.
- Examples:
- Imagining a cat on a tree.
- Imagining standing in front of the Taj Mahal and describing the scene.
- Map Analogy: Imagining is akin to reading a map and locating places on a physical map.
Concepts
- Definition: A concept is a mental representation of a category that refers to a class of objects, ideas, or events sharing common properties.
- Identification Process: Recognizing an object/event involves matching it with existing categories based on characteristics.
- Example: Categorizing an apple as a fruit, a table as furniture.
- Concept Formation: Organizes knowledge, enabling efficient access.
- Example: Children organized their items for easy retrieval.
Culture and Thinking
- Cultural Influence: Thinking is shaped by beliefs, values, and social practices.
- Study Example: American vs. Asian students' responses to fish images:
- Americans focus on unique features (analytical thinking).
- Asians consider relationships/context (holistic thinking).
7.2 The Process of Thinking: Problem Solving
- Definition: An orderly process focused on finding a solution to specific problems.
- Goal Orientation: Daily activities typically aim toward specific goals.
- Problems as Goals: Problems may be activities performed to achieve goals, not always obstacles.
- Example: Making a quick snack for a friend is a form of problem-solving.
States in Problem Solving
- Initial State: The problem as it is presented.
- End State: The desired goal once the problem is resolved.
- Connection via Operations: Mental operations link initial state to end state through several steps:
- Identify the problem
- Plan the solution (Set sub-goals)
- Select and execute a solution
- Rethink and redefine problems/solutions
Obstacles to Problem Solving
- Mental Set:
- Tendency to rely on previous methods, leading to rigidity and difficulty adapting new approaches.
- Example: Persisting with failed math strategies.
- Lack of Motivation:
- Motivation is critical; without it, skills and talents can be irrelevant.
- Continuous effort is required to pursue solutions.
7.3 Reasoning
- Definition: Reasoning is the analytical process of gathering information to arrive at conclusions; a problem-solving method.
- Examples: Making assumptions about a person running on a platform can lead to various conclusions.
- Types of Reasoning:
- Deductive Reasoning:
- Involves general ideas to arrive at a specific conclusion.
- Example: Concluding a person is late due to their urgency based on a general assumption.
- Caution: Avoid assuming the truth of the basic statement without verification.
- Inductive Reasoning:
- Builds general conclusions from specific observations.
- Example: Concluding someone left a bag on the train after observing them return with it.
- Error: Drawing conclusions without full fact verification.
- Commonly used in scientific reasoning.
Analogy
- Definition: A logical comparison between relationships of pairs of things.
- Examples: Comparisons such as "water is to fish as air is to humans" help visualize relationships which aids problem-solving.
7.4 Decision-Making
- Link to Reasoning: Deductive and inductive reasoning contribute to judgments and decisions.
- Judgment Definition: Best defined as forming opinions based on evidence and knowledge.
- Example: Assessing suitability for a sales position based on social behavior.
- Automatic Judgments: Instances of immediate decision-making, like a reaction to a red light.
- Changed Judgments: Evaluating new information can alter previous judgments, e.g., changing perceptions of a strict teacher.

- Definition: Creative thinking generates novel ideas or solutions.
- Examples of Creativity:

- Everyday vs. Special Talent Creativity: Everyday creativity is common, while special talent leads to exceptional achievements.
Characteristics of Creative Thinking
- Involves novelty and originality.
- Example: New product models become original only with unique features.
- Reality Orientation: Creative thinking needs to be practical and socially desirable.
- Effective Surprise Concept by Burner: Indicates that true creativity can astonish people with unexpected ideas.
Types of Creative Thinking
- Convergent Thinking:
- Focuses on finding the one correct answer.
- Example: Sequences like 3, 6, 9 - identify the next number as 12.
- Divergent Thinking:
- Open-ended thinking allowing for multiple answers and novel ideas.
- Abilities of Divergent Thinking:
- Fluency: Generating many ideas for a given task.
- Example: Enumerating uses for a paper cup.
- Flexibility: Thinking from various perspectives or adapting ideas.
- Example: A paper cup's use as a container or a holder.
- Originality: Producing unique ideas by recognizing new relationships.
- Example: Combining agriculture with protein extraction from weeds.
- Elaboration: Expanding ideas with detail and exploration of implications.
- Example: Improving food production through innovative agricultural methods.
Importance of Both Thinking Styles
- Both thinking styles contribute to creativity. Divergent thinking generates ideas, while convergent thinking narrows down to the best ideas.
Lateral Thinking
- Definition: Introduced by Edward de Bono, lateral thinking contrasts with vertical thinking (which is linear).
- Importance: Essential for alternative interpretations and solutions.
- Six Thinking Hats Technique to diversify thinking:
- White Hat: Focus on information and facts.
- Red Hat: Express feelings and emotions.
- Black Hat: Focus on judgment and caution.
- Yellow Hat: Consider benefits and possibilities.
