Regional Terms in Anatomy

Regional Terms

  • Developing a common anatomical language involves learning specific regional terms.
  • Create a chart to match regional terms with common body parts.

Cephalic Region (Head)

  • Cephalic Region: The entire head.
    • Frontal Region: Forehead or front of the head.
    • Orbital Region: Eyes.
    • Nasal Region: Nose.
    • Oral Region: Mouth.
    • Mental Region: Chin (associated with mental activity).

Cervical Region

  • Cervical Region: Neck region. Similar to "cervical collar."

Thoracic Region (Chest)

  • Thoracic Region: Entire chest.
    • Mammary Region: Area containing the breasts.
    • Sternal Region: Region above the sternum (breastbone).
    • Axillary Region: Armpit (e.g., deodorant Axe).
  • The thoracic and abdominal regions are separated by the diaphragm.
  • Diaphragm: Breathing muscle with a dome-like shape.

Abdominal Region

  • Abdominal Region: Below the diaphragm.
    • Umbilical Region: Where the umbilical cord comes out (belly button).

Pelvic and Coxal Regions

  • Pelvic Region: Area where hip bones cross in the front.
  • Coxal Region: Side of the hip where the bone can be felt.

Inguinal and Pubic Regions

  • Inguinal Region: Crease between the thigh and genitalia; site of potential inguinal hernias.
  • Pubic Region: Area where the genitalia are located (genital region).

Upper Limb

  • Upper Limb: Entire arm.
    • Acromial Region: Shoulder region.
    • Brachial Region: Upper arm.
    • Cubital Region: Elbow region (back of the elbow); also known as the olecranal region.
    • Antecubital Region: Front of the elbow
    • Antebrachial Region: Forearm.
    • Carpal Region: Wrist.
    • Metacarpal Region: Palm of the hand (near the carpal region).
    • Digital Region: Fingers.
    • Pollux: Thumb (part of the digital region).

Lower Limb

  • Lower Limb: Entire leg.
    • Coxal Region: Hip.
    • Femoral Region: Thigh (contains the femur bone).
    • Patellar Region: Knee.
    • Crural Region: Lower leg (shin).
    • Pedal Region: Entire foot.
    • Tarsal Region: Ankle.
    • Metatarsal Region: Top of the foot (near the tarsal region).
    • Digital Region: Toes.
    • Hallux: Big toe.

Back of the Body

  • Some terms are the same as the front view.
    • Acromial, brachial, carpal, metacarpal, digital, and femoral regions remain the same.
  • Olecranal Region: Is a synonym for the cubital region (elbow).
  • Popliteal Region: Back of the knee.
  • Sural Region: Calf region (back of the lower leg).

Foot and Head (Posterior View)

  • Calcaneal Region: Heel.
  • Plantar Region: Sole of the foot (bottom).
  • Otic Region: Ear.
  • Occipital Region: Back of the head.
  • Nuchal Region: Back of the neck.
  • Scapular Region: Area of the shoulder blades (scapula).

Torso (Posterior View)

  • Vertebral Region: Area of the vertebral column.
  • Lumbar Region: Lower back.
  • Gluteal Region: Buttocks (gluteus muscles).
  • Sacral Region: Area over the sacrum (bone).
  • Perineal Region: Area between the anus and external genitalia.

Importance of Learning Regional Terms

  • Essential for clinical communication.
  • Familiarize yourself through flashcards or charts.

Practical Application

  • Acromial region.
  • Metacarpal Region:
    • Patient was stabbed in the metacarpal region.
  • Femoral Region:
    • Patient was stabbed in the femoral region. (anterior or posterior)
