Responsibilities include:
Development of the initial project idea.
Finalizing the script.
Arranging financing.
Managing the production team.
Director:
Oversees the shooting and assembly of the film.
Comparable to a novel's author, serves as the primary visionary for the film but relies on collaboration with many other artists and technicians.
Screenwriter:
Crafts dialogue and shapes the film's sequence of events.
Ensures logical transitions between scenes for coherent storytelling.
Art Director:
Responsible for the film’s settings, including buildings, landscapes, and interior spaces.
Acquires props, decorates sets, and ensures believable settings.
Costume Designer:
Selects costumes that represent the film's time period and the characters' socio-economic status, occupations, and self-perceptions.
Editor:
Organizes and arranges footage into a cohesive sequence following the shooting phase.
Makes critical decisions on which shots to use and their order, significantly influencing the final film's appearance.
Actor:
Portrays characters, collaborating closely with the director and cinematographer.
Role demands more than mere recitation of lines; requires deep engagement with the character's context.
Stages in Production
Development:
The starting phase often involves developing a script, which may originate from an existing work or a pitched idea from a director/writer to a producer.
Pre-Production:
Phase where production specifics are refined, establishing overall project vision, shooting location, and casting decisions.
The hiring of a line manager or production manager to create a detailed schedule and budget occurs here.
Production:
Active shooting phase requiring ongoing vigilance in budget and schedule adherence.
Essential communication among all involved parties including location, set, office, production company, and distributors.
Principle Photography:
Marks the phase when actual filming takes place, often the costliest part due to salaries and associated production expenses.
Communication is crucial among all teams to keep records, adhere to schedules, and stay within budgets.
Wrap:
Post-shoot phase focused on dismantling sets and ensuring all materials are returned to suppliers in good order.
Full records of the shoot must be maintained.
Post-Production:
Commences post-principal photography but may run concurrently with wrapping.
Involves reviewing footage and editing the film, integrating contributions from visual effects (VFX), music, and sound design.
The film will reach a locked state and preparation of delivery elements will ensue.
Distribution:
The completion of the film sets off the distribution process, crucial for recouping investments.
Films are distributed to cinemas and platforms such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and HBO.
