Preparing for Virginia Learner's Permit Test

  • Be well-prepared for the knowledge exam.
  • Study the Virginia Driver's Manual.
  • Utilize the interactive driver's license study guide and sample knowledge exam on the DMV's website.

Types of Virginia Licenses

  • Learner's Permit
  • Provisional License (Temporary License)
  • Non-Commercial License (Driver's License)
  • Motorcycle Permit
  • Driver's License with Class M Motorcycle
  • Motorcycle Only License
  • Commercial Driver's License (with classes, including Class C for school buses)

Photo Identification Card

  • Available if you don't have a learner's permit or driver's license, or are ineligible.

Virginia Driver's License Application Form (DL1P)

  • Completing the DL-1P application form is a first step.
  • If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the second page to grant permission for the DMV to issue a learner's permit and driver's license.

DMV Vision Screening

  • Tests visual acuity and peripheral vision.
  • Eyesight and peripheral vision must meet Virginia's standards to operate a vehicle safely.

The Knowledge Exam

  • Two-part exam testing knowledge of traffic signs, motor vehicle laws, and safe driving techniques.
  • Part 1: All 10 traffic sign questions must be answered correctly.
  • Part 2: Must score at least 80% on the general knowledge questions.

Taking the Road Skills Test

  • If you are 18, the Road Skills Test is given by the driving school.
  • Must successfully complete 40 or more of the 50 driving maneuvers to pass.

    • Clear window secondary photo
    • Security printing
    • Tactile lettering
    • Card personalization

Penalties

  • Driving using a fake or counterfeit license = driving without a license.
  • Driving without a license = Class II misdemeanor.
  • Penalty: Up to six months in jail and a fine of up to 1,0001,000.

Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation

  • Sign up to be an organ donor when applying for a license, permit, or ID card.
  • Importance of educating others on organ donation.

Restrictions and Endorsements

  • Endorsement: Qualified to use a certain type of vehicle.
  • Restriction: Conditions affecting driver safety.

Duration of License

  • Virginia driver's license is valid for eight years.
  • Expires on your birthday.
