Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal

I. Introduction

  • Franklin D. Roosevelt promised the New Deal to help the people during the depression
  • Major federal programs were implemented to provide support for farmers, the unemployed, youth, and the elderly

II. The New Deal

  • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
  • Works Progress Administration (WPA)
  • Civil Works Administration (CWA)
  • Farm Security Administration (FSA)
  • National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 (NIRA)
  • Social Security Administration (SSA)

III. Roosevelt's Plan

  • Relief, recovery, reform

IV. Brain Trust

  • Group of academic advisors appointed by Roosevelt to help during the election
  • More influential and reliable than his own cabinet

V. Francis Perkins

  • American workers-rights advocate who served as the 4th United States Secretary of Labor
  • First woman ever to serve in a presidential cabinet

VI. Hundred Days

  • During the first hundred days of Roosevelt in office, he immediately summoned the United States Congress to a meeting
  • Presented and passed a series of 15 major bills designed to counter the effects of the Great Depression

VII. Repeal of Prohibition

  • Roosevelt signed the 21st amendment repealing the 18th amendment and ultimately ending prohibition, and legalizing alcohol

VIII. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

  • Signed by Roosevelt, allowed single men between the ages of 18 and 25 to enlist in work programs to improve America's public lands, forests, and parks
  • Provided people jobs during the depression

IX. Tennessee Valley Authority

  • Aimed to help reduce problems by teaching better farming methods, replanting trees, and building dams
  • Generated and sold surplus electricity, created jobs, and conserved water power

X. Federal Housing Administration

  • Insured banks, mortgage companies, and other lenders, thereby encouraging the construction of new homes and the repair of existing structures
  • FDR's hope was that the law would also spur employment in the construction industry

XI. Social Security Act

  • Signed by President Roosevelt
  • Created a social insurance program designed to pay retired workers age 65 or older a continuing income after retirement
  • Included several provisions for general welfare
