Nursing Program Advisor Meeting Notes
Overview
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the nursing program and associated liberal arts requirements for the student.
Current Status
The student is currently in a nursing program and exploring options.
Liberal Arts Requirements
Requires fulfillment of the following liberal arts courses:
International/Multicultural Studies
Arts and Humanities (1 course)
History (1 course)
Psychology Requirement: The psychology course taken for nursing will satisfy one liberal arts requirement.
Mathematics Requirement: A math course must be taken, which is already planned.
English Requirement: An English course (ENG 123) is required for the nursing program.
Strategic Course Planning
There are only 2 remaining liberal arts classes needed if planned efficiently.
The intent is to finish them in 2 classes, which would require careful selection and timing of courses.
Updated Plan
The advisor updates the student’s plan multiple times a year, providing access to it without allowing edits by the student to maintain consistency.
Current plan includes:
Spring Start for the clinical program in the sophomore year.
Courses planned for Spring:
Research Methods (English)
Biochemistry
Statistics 150
Advanced Anatomy (the student has previously completed Intro Anatomy)
Total Credits for Spring: 13 credits, excluding honors class options.
Course Options
The addition of an honors class may increase credits to 16.
Possibilities exist to push back some classes, including English to the next Fall.
Expected courses in Fall:
Child Development (Psychology)
Microbiology
Pathophysiology
Subclass Diseases
Total Credits for Fall: 16 credits, with only 1 lab requirement.
Microbiology Discussion
The Microbiology course has options for where it can be taken:
If taken during Fall at UNC, it must be a 300-level course.
Alternatively, a free version can be taken at Ames Community College.
Student considers if it’s better to switch the order of classes (Biochemistry and Microbiology) to better suit the semester's load and retain comfort with the workload.
CNA Program
Inquiry on whether UNC offers a CNA program: No, it does not.
Student expresses interest in obtaining CNA certification before applying to the nursing program.
Options discussed regarding taking Microbiology and Biochemistry in specific semesters to facilitate this goal.
Application to Nursing Program
Students can apply at the end of the Spring semester for early admission into the nursing program.
The admission does have a higher GPA requirement; the previous year’s requirement was a 3.5 GPA based on the most recent 30 credits.
Current semester grades (Spring) will be considered in the application.
Fall Semester grades will not factor in for application but need to be maintained for program admission.
Enrollment in courses may help in achieving a sufficient GPA.
Additional information and application details will be sent via email upon completion of the semester.
Conclusion
The student is thrilled about the program and all potential opportunities.
Confirmation of all prerequisite courses being noted and that they are on track.

Follow-Up
Student will think about the best classes to take regarding their workload.
Will check the possibility for an online option for microbiology.
Scheduled to continue communication regarding class registrations and application timelines.
